One morning, in the newspaper, Cabrissade reads Marny’s obituary and then takes great pleasure in taunting him with it, suggesting that he has been forgotten by all to the point that they actually think him dead. When they realise their mistake, people at the newspaper in question send one of their journalists to apologise to Marny for their blunder. The young journalist happens to be a great admirer of Marny’s work and even got involved in a fist fight to defend the actor’s good name. Comforted by the young man’s enthusiasm, Marny starts telling him about his love for great authors.

MARNY: There’s a woman here in this home and no one pays her any attention. She’s also been in Musset, Shakespeare. Theatre isn’t done like that anymore. Sometimes, we reread a scene or an act together. Without that, we wouldn’t be able to keep living.

Un matin, Cabrissade trouve la notice nécrologique de Marny dans le journal et prend un malin plaisir à s’en servir pour le narguer : il suggère que Marny a sombré si profondément dans l’oubli que les gens croient qu’il est mort. Se rendant compte de l’erreur, le journal en question envoie un de ses journalistes à l’abbaye pour présenter des excuses à Marny. Le jeune journaliste est un grand admirateur de Marny, allant jusqu’à échanger des coups de poing avec un détracteur pour défendre son talent. Réconforté par l’enthousiasme du jeune homme, Marny se met à lui parler de son amour des grands auteurs. 

MARNY : Il y a ici, dans la maison, une camarade à laquelle personne ne fait attention. Elle a joué Musset, Shakespeare, elle aussi, comme on ne les joue plus. Quelquefois, nous relisons ensemble une scène, un acte. Sans ça, nous ne pourrions pas vivre.
